Technology is continuing to revolutionize the shipping industry. U.S. ports are experiencing a significant digitization transition. These ports keep the economy moving by creating jobs, processing shipments and securing borders. An increase in technology among these ports means that their capacity can be expanded and more shipments can be processed and handled.
The American Association of Port Authorities held their annual “Smart Ports” seminar this previous March, at which future plans for the implementation of technology at ports was discussed. The AAPA was able to showcase its digital shipping platform capable of speeding up global trade flows by the third quarter of 2018.
According to Port Technology, new “loading plates” are being implemented in ports that allow for timber to be automatically loaded into containers. Cranes have also been a focal point for improvement among ports. These cranes feature automation technology and can move more cargo more efficiently.
Due to a major surge in the shipping industry in early 2018, many U.S. ports are struggling to process the capacity of the shipments being handled overseas. Many professionals in the industry have looked to advancing technology rather than physically expanding the ports to solve the capacity problems.
